Flooding leaves two dead and one missing in northern Vietnam

Hanoi, (IINA) – Two people, including a 2-year-old child, died in floods in a mountainous region of northern Vietnam which has experienced a week of heavy rain, the state media reported on Thursday.

Tong Van Bong, 53, and Lo Thi Linh, 2, drowned in rural Lai Chau province, the VN Express News reported. Another person, who was fishing in a stream when a flash flood hit, was reported to be missing.

Lai Chau, which is Vietnam’s most sparsely populated province, as well as its poorest, has received approximately 205 millimeters of heavy rain in just one week.

Floods and landslides have crippled much of the region’s transportation infrastructure as bridges and roads have been washed away, and the country’s Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control warned earlier Thursday morning that more flooding was expected throughout the day.
