Trade Agreement with Australia is in force since 1990, but no significant progress has been made
Islamabad, March 11, 2013 (PPI-OT): Mr Shahid Vaseem Chairman Pak-Australia Business Council convened the First Meeting of the Council which was graced by Mr Peter Heyward, Australian High commissioner.
Haji Fazal Kadir Sheerani, President FPCCI in his welcome address emphasized the need for more interaction between the Business Communities of two countries. He also stressed upon that opportunities for joint ventures exist in many fields including Fruit Processing, Coal Mining, Mineral Mining etc in Baluchistan and other parts of Pakistan.
He also pointed out that as the Business Councils can only be formed by FPCCI under the directives of Ministry of Commerce, Government of Pakistan, any parallel Body be discouraged by the High Commission in order to strengthen the Apex Body.
Mr Shahid Vaseem, Chairman Pak-Australia Business Council mentioned that Trade Agreement with Australia is in force since 1990, but no significant progress has been made. He also suggested up-gradation of Council to Joint Business Council status for which High Commissioner may facilitate. He also pointed out the importance of Australian’s collaboration in the areas of mining, livestock, citrus, juice processing facilities etc.
Shaikh Haroon Rasheed Vice President FPCCI suggested that an MOU may be signed between the two chambers to promote trade and economic cooperation and to establish Joint Pakistan-Australia Business Council.
H. E Peter Heyward, Australian High Commissioner thanked the FPCCI for inviting him. He suggested that Australian Vocational Training Institutes may be established in Pakistan for promoting technology; developing business and investment opportunities in the private sectors and strengthening our relationship which will allow the trading partners from Pakistan to increase access to Australian markets, providing opportunities to increase exports and promote Pakistan. He informed that Australia has opened its visa Office in Karachi also and the process has been streamlined to facilitate the business people.
