Pakistan Museum of Natural History going online for entire world viewers

Islamabad, March 13, 2013 (PPI-OT): UNESCO will help Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) in developing its online virtual tour so that the entire world people, especially the researchers and students could benefit from its facilities, said UNESCO Country Director Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata on Wednesday.

She was speaking as Chief Guest at the launching ceremony of Audio Commentary Equipment, a facility for the visitors, donated by the UNESCO to PMNH, a subsidiary organization of Pakistan Science Foundation working under Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST). PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro, PMNH Director General Mr. Hasan Waseem Afzal, senior officers from Ministry of Science and Technology, UNESCO officials and a good number of scientists, students and media persons were present on this occasion.

Dr. Nagata said UNESCO will also help PMNH in documentary on Shark Whale specimen’s stuffing and exhibition process as well as digitization of the Museum collection.

She said UNESCO’s support to the Museum is based on its concept to promote science and education according to its mandate. She said though PMNH is small but unique in terms of its collection, especially of fossils that reveal natural history of millions years past.

Dr. Nagata said though the donation of commentary equipment is a small contribution but it will help visitors a lot in understanding the exhibits during their visit to the Museum. The equipment will make museum more scientific and dynamic, she said, adding, launching the commentary equipment at PMNH is a pilot project and later this facility will also be replicated in other museums of Pakistan.

She also spoke on UNESCO and PSF collaboration, which is going on since long for promotion of science. She made a mention to some of their collaborative programmes, especially Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme and Inquiry-based Science Education Programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Manzoor Soomro stressed the need for developing collaboration with other organizations in order to achieve common goals. The Chairman said the common goal of UNESCO and PSF is promotion of science. He said the concepts of UNESCO programmes are key to our science education system.

He said we have to look for support from other organizations through collaboration as in today’s world no one can succeed while working in isolation. He said the digitization process of the Museum collection will add new dimension to their collaboration. The PSF Chairman said they in collaboration with UNESCO are going to organize International Zoological Congress in coming month.

He said PMNH is focal point of UNESCO’s MAB programme in Pakistan and MAB committee has been constituted to implement this programme in Pakistan.

PMNH DG Dr. Hasan Waseem Afzal said scientists from PMNH nearly explored all regions of our country including the barren and rocky area of Balochistan for the collection of rocks, minerals, fossils and plants and animal life.

He said massive collection of these specimens can be seen in the repositories of the museum which is now passing through the process of digitization and it will be possible to mark these species according to their geographic locations after the process of digitization.

The DG said PMNH has uplifted his outlook through the display of Whale skeleton and Baluchitherium, which attract the visitor from different walks of life. He said during last five months 37,557 visitors have visited PMNH, which is a great achievement of Museum to educate people on our natural wealth.

Mr. Hasan Wassem Afzal said the donation of Audio Commentary Equipment from UNESCO has enabled them to organize formally this Launching Ceremony in order to give access to visitors to use this equipment.

He said UNESCO Pakistan has generously lend a big hand to strengthen PMNH through support for updating the VOG Gallery for visitors, contribution of Rs.7,50,000 for displaying the Whale Shark Skin, MAB Programme sponsorship under which National MAB Committee has been reactivated.

PMNH Deputy Director General Mr. Akhtar Javed also addressed the launching ceremony and thanked UNESCO, MoST and PSF for their continued support to Museum in research and educational activities.
