Srinagar, August 05 2013 (PPI-OT): In a major twist to infamous Ishrat Jahan fake encounter by Indian police in Gujarat, a team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is camping in Srinagar for last few days to ascertain the identity of two other persons killed with her in 2004.

A Srinagar-based English daily, Rising Kashmir, quoting its sources reported that the three-member CBI team from Ahmadabad arrived in Srinagar on Thursday. “They are in touch with J and K police to ascertain information regarding two other persons Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar killed along with Ishrat Jehan in a staged encounter by Gujarat cops,” sources told the daily.

“After a through probe into the fake encounter, it emerged that there were conflicting reports regarding the identity of Rana and Johar. Now a CBI team from Ahmadabad has arrived in Srinagar and are investigating the matter,” a senior official told the daily on the condition of anonymity. He said that the CBI team was seeking details of all the missing persons in occupied Kashmir prior to this encounter.

Referring to two encounters at Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and Astanpora, Srinagar, the daily reported that it is likely possible that Rana and Johar might have been in the custody of police in the occupied territory – along with two others, who were later shot dead in Srinagar – and handed over to Ahmadabad police for the staged encounter.

Ishrat Jahan and three other persons, Javed Sheikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar, were killed by the Gujarat police in an encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004, and were labelled by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) as Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives involved in a plot to assassinate the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, and BJP leader, Lal Krishna Advani.

However, after a long investigation, in 2009 an Ahmedabad Metropolitan court ruled that the encounter was staged and fake. On July 3 this year, the CBI filing its charge-sheet in the court confirmed that the shooting was a staged encounter carried out in cold blood.
