Srinagar, September 03, 2015 (PPI-OT):In occupied Kashmir, Indian police personnel thrashed the members of Humanitarian Group, an amalgam of social workers, in Lelhar area of Pulwama district for carrying pictures and videos of Mujahideen in their mobile phones. The social workers talking to media said that the group had been carrying out relief and rehabilitation activities in the area since last year’s devastating floods. They said that they were moving around in their official vehicle when the personnel of Special Operations Groups of the police intercepted them and asked them to disembark.

“We were asked to prove our identities which we did. However, the men started to check our phones,” one of the members of the social work group said. He said that on finding pictures and videos of Mujahideen in one of the phones, the SOG men started to beat them mercilessly. “The videos and pictures nowadays are circulated through the messaging application Whatsapp and get downloaded automatically. We had just forgotten to delete them from the phone,” said another member, requesting anonymity.

The social workers were beaten black and blue and were detained for quite a while including the female members of the group. They said that they managed to call their head office and the SOG men got a call from their higher ups “asking them to release us.” However the call, the social workers said, further infuriated the SOG men and they started beating them afresh.

On the other hand, Indian police arrested six youth from Awantipora area of the district for allegedly uploading pictures and videos of Mujahideen on social networking sites. A police official said that more arrests were be made in the coming days.
