Flood Affectees Continue to Receive Financial Help: Prime Minister Gilani
Islamabad: Prime Minster Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has directed Ms Farzana Raja, Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme, to ensure that the recipients of the financial assistance under the Programme do not suffer due to dislocation caused by the devastating rains in the province of Sindh.
The Prime Minister expressed these views while talking to Ms Farzana Raja, Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme who called on him here at the PM House today. The Prime Minister said that he would visit Karachi soon and see the effectiveness of the arrangements put in place by the BISP.
The Prime Minister directed the Chairperson to work out foolproof arrangements for distribution of money among the affected people of Badin, Sanghar and Mirpur Khas districts, which have badly been affected by heavy rains.
Chairperson BISP apprised the Prime Minister that his organization is cognizant of the situation and is working to figure out a strategy that will ensure the flow of financial assistance to the families’ uninterruptedly. The Chairperson said that the help of NADRA, NDMA, PDMA and provincial authorities is being sought to identify the affectees who are on the BISP list.
Ms. Farzana Raja said that Rs. 1.7 billion were released in the month of August this year adding that Rs. 139 million were released from the State Bank of Pakistan to Smart Card holders. The rest of the amount has been transferred to the Post Office and the recipients of the BISP can claim the money from the nearest post offices. The Chairperson said that there were one million families on the list who have been affected by the floods and rains this year.
The Chairperson said that 48,000 households of district Sanghar, 140,000 households of district Badin, 21000 households of Mirpur Khas, 60000 families of Benazirabad and 53000 households of district Dadu are among the beneficiaries of BISP in Sindh.
The Prime Minister appreciated efforts of the Chairperson BISP and her team to mitigate the sufferings of the victims who deserve our moral and material support during these testing times. It may be recalled that Rs. 4 billion were distributed among flood affectees by BISP last year, the Chairperson said.
Chairperson BISP Ms Farzana Raja briefed the Prime Minister about her meetings with ADP President and his entire management team focusing on the BISP’s effectiveness to alleviate poverty in the remote and less developed areas of the country.
She also briefed the Prime Minister about her recent visit to China, the Philippines and SAARC countries. She said that the flagship social programme of the Government of Pakistan and its reach to the people at the last end of the food chain was highly appreciated by SAARC delegates who were impressed by its scope and the vision behind it. They were of the opinion to replicate it in their countries as a ladder for empowerment of the poorest of the poor.
