Education system has failed to promote peace: Federal Minister
Islamabad: Federal Minister for Professional and Technical Education Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, and Chairman Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights Riaz Fitiana were the chief guests on the Youth Peace Conference held here today.
The conference was chaired by Brig (Retd) Iqbal Shafi, President Sir Syed Memorial Society. Students from different schools of the Federal Directorate of Education participated in the event. Some presented their thoughts on Literacy for Peace while some sang songs highlighting the spirit of the day and the importance of peace in the societies.
On the this occasion Federal Minister Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada said that our education is not delivering what is required to promote peace in our country. During the last 64 year of independence, we have turned hostage of religious intolerance that has shattered peace in our society. We have turned intolerant and kill those who speak of their minds. We need to give space to every expression of speech.
The Minister further said that another reason for mess-up is unemployment that cannot be reduced with the formal education alone. We need to promote technical and professional education for self-employment that is the only key to create more economic opportunities in the country. We need to tap 30 million youth that would lead our nation to prosperity and peace.
Riaz Fitiana was of the view that only peaceful environment would lead to progress and development. This could be achieved through dialogue and tolerance. For youth peace of mind is an essential to concentrate on their prime responsibilities and that is to seek knowledge and skills.
It is the responsibility of parent to provide cordial environment at home, and teachers need to groom the young well at educational institutions. He also urged the government to allocate more funds for higher education, and asked the youth to play their role in combating terrorism and energy deficiency.
On this occasion Munir Ahmed, Director Development Communications Network (DEVCOM-Pakistan) said: “We need to inculcate tolerance in ourselves for peaceful environment around us. We should give space to each other for their thought and free expression considering them equal human being but may be with different ideology and faith. This diversity is the beauty of unity that brings all colours of life to our society.”
