Srinagar, March 17, 2016 (PPI-OT):The family of detained Kashmiri intellectual, Prof Syed Abdur Rehman Gilani, has said that he is being victimized for raising voice for the right to self-determination of the Kashmiris. Prof SAR Gilani’s daughter, Nusrat Gilani in an interview with a Srinagar-based English daily said, “Because of supporting Kashmir cause, my father is in jail today.”

She said that her father had been visiting various Indian states to garner support for Kashmiris. “He has been seeking support for right to self-determination of Kashmiris at various forums in various states of India. People are listening to him and he manages to mobilize people in support of Kashmiris. So he has become a target of BJP-led government and Hindutva forces,” she said.

Nusrat Gilani also decried silence of Delhi-based media over the arrest of her father. “This is a matter of concern and we have apprehensions that my father’s case will get sabotaged. We fear that if something wrong happens to him tomorrow, there is nobody to question them (Government of India). Even his college people have not reached out in his support for fear of state backlash,” she added.

Prof SAR Gilani was arrested on February 15 for organizing an event at Press Club of India on the martyrdom anniversary of Kashmiri martyr, Muhammad Afzal Guru, on February 9. He was booked under sedition charges and is on judicial remand till March 30. The participants had raised questions over the secred execution of Afzal Guru who was hanged in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail in 2013. They had also shouted slogans hailing Afzal Guru.

“Does holding a seminar tantamount to sedition? We believe he is being targeted for being a Kashmiri and supporting Kashmir cause,” Nusrat said. “But despite challenges and hostile situation, I am committed to fight for my father’s freedom,” said Nusrat, who is pursuing law in New Delhi.
