Detailed engineering design of Mohamand Dam to be completed in January 2017: Chairman
Lahore, May 05, 2016 (PPI-OT): Work on detailed engineering design of Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is continuing, which will be completed in January 2017.
This was stated by the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Chairman Zafar Mahmood during his visit to the project site located in Mohmand Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). WAPDA General Manager (Hydro) Planning, General Manager (Projects) North and representatives of the consultants were also present during the visit.
Speaking on the occasion, WAPDA Chairman said that Mohmand Dam, being a multi-purpose project, is of immense importance for socio-economic uplift of the country, as it will not only generate low-cost hydel electricity but also provide water for agriculture besides mitigating flood in Charsadda, Peshawar and Nowshera. He directed the project authorities that detailed engineering design of the project be completed as early as possible so that construction work could be started on the project.
During his visit to the dam site, the Chairman witnessed the activities of topographic survey and geological investigations required for detailed engineering design of Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project.
It is pertinent to mention that Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project has a gross water storage capacity of 1.3 million acre feet (MAF) to mitigate floods and irrigate about 17 thousand acres of land. With generation capacity of 800 mega watt (MW), the project will contribute more than 3 billion units of electricity to the national grid every year.
Later, WAPDA Chairman called on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra to brief him about WAPDA projects in FATA. These projects included Mohmand Dam, Kurram Tangi Dam and Bara Dam.
WAPDA Chairman apprised KP Governor that detailed engineering design of Mohmand Dam is being prepared with the financial assistance of French Development Agency (AFD) to the tune of 10 million Euro. AFD has also indicated to provide part of funds during construction phase of the project, he added. The Chairman briefed the Governor that contract for construction of Stage-I of Kurram Tangi Dam located in North Waziristan Agency has been awarded, adding that the USAID is providing US$ 81 million for the purpose. Stage-I will be completed in 3 years and irrigate more than 16 thousand acres of land in North Waziristan Agency in addition to generating about 18 MW of electricity. Detailed engineering design of Bara Dam located in Khyber Agency, has also been completed while PC-I of the project is being submitted for approval. Bara Dam will irrigate 42 thousand acres of land and generate about 6 MW of electricity, he further said.
