Senate Standing Committee on Commerce appreciates goodwill gesture of government by dispatching 10000 million tons of rice to Wuhan

Islamabad, August 23, 2016 (PPI-OT):The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce has appreciated the goodwill gesture of government by dispatching 10000 MTs of rice to Wuhan in friendly country China. The Committee Chairman Senator Shibli Faraz remarked that Pakistan and China have supported each other in testing times. He expressed satisfaction over the process of procurement in emergency situation.

The Committee also considered the State life Insurance Corporation (SLIC) (Re-Organization and Conversion) Bill, 2016. Secretary Ministry of Commerce and Chairperson of SLIC gave a detailed briefing on the Bill. Members of the Committee were of the view that the organizations is already running in profit. They opposed any privatization of the profitable institution. The Committee called for safeguarding interests of all the stakeholders and decided to hold a consultative process with all the stakeholders in this regard.

It was informed that the organization totally owns 91 properties of different kinds and 79% of the area has been rented out. However, 21%, the SLIC informed, is vacant. The Committee reasons for the vacant space and directed the authorities concerned to take appropriate steps for renting out the vacant area as early as possible.

Regarding Anti-Dumping Duties Bill, 2015, the committee pointed out the legislation was carried to make the National Tariff Commission more effective. However, members of the committee expressed their concerns that NTC is not functioning properly and there is need to make it more vibrant and effective. It was pointed out that local industry is complaining against malpractices and import of Boron mixed iron rods and no proper action is being taken in this regard. Senator Ilyas Bilour pointed out that used oil was being imported which is a serious heath hazard and the Ministry needs to take strict action and impose ban on the import of such hazardous item.

Senator Shibli Faraz said that the Ministry has a crucial role in promoting healthy environment for commerce and trade both at local and international level. The meeting was attended among others by Senators Ilyas Ahmed Bilour , Karim Ahmad Khawaja , Mufti Abdul Sattar , Muhammad Usman Khan Kakar , Saleem Mandviwala , Haji Saifullah Khan Bangash and Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir besides Secretary Ministry of Commerce and its attached departments.
