LGL Ambassadors Meet Chairman HEC

Islamabad, September 28, 2016 (PPI-OT): The “Let Girls Learn Ambassadors” Summyka Qadir from Nishtar Medical College, Multan and Deepa Kumari from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro met Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman, Higher Education Commission at the Commission Secretariat in Islamabad. Dr. Arshad Ali, Executive Director HEC and Dr. G Raza Bhatti, Member HEC were also present.

Summayka Qadir and Deepa Kumari represented Pakistan in New York City during United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) week. They participated in the “Broadway Shines a Light on Girls’ Education” event on September 19, part of the Let Girls Learn initiative, which encourages world leaders to provide education opportunities to an estimated 62 million girls globally who do not attend school. Hosted by US First Lady Michelle Obama, the programme was convened as a side event to coincide with gathering of world leaders in New York for the opening of 71st UNGA.

The Chairman HEC congratulated both the scholars for representing their country in the UN General Assembly. He presented laptops to these scholars as a token of appreciation and motivation. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed encouraged them to take a lead role and motivate youth to utilize their potential and achieve excellence in their respective fields.

Both Summyka and Deepa are recipients of USAID funded Merit and Need-based Scholarship Programme. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched Phase-I of USAID-funded Merit and Need-based Scholarship Programme in 2004 in collaboration with HEC Pakistan.

So far 1807 deserving students have benefitted from this programme in the field of Agriculture and Business Administration. The Phase-II of the project, targeting 3000 students in Social Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Business and Medical with an intensive focus on females of the deprived areas, will result in positive effects on macroeconomic development of the country.
