Prime Minister Asks Parliamentarians To Lead Anti-Polio Campaign
Peshawar: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has called upon all members of the Cabinet and the Parliamentarians to be actively involved in anti-polio campaign in their respective areas. He stressed the importance of the continuous efforts at the level of village and Union Councils to ensure that the anti-polio teams are properly constituted and no child is left without polio immunization. The Prime Minister told the Cabinet that Pakistan was among the few countries that had virus transmissions.
The Prime Minister gave these directions in a Cabinet meeting held in Peshawar today. Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Social Sector and focal person for National anti-Polio Campaign, briefed the federal Cabinet on the status of polio in the country. She informed the Cabinet that a total of 171 polio cases were reported across the country.
She informed the Cabinet that the level of success in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was quite encouraging as the number of polio cases have dropped this year compared to the last year. She said that 90 and 51 polio cases were identified in KPK and FATA respectively.
She further added that eradication of polio from Pakistan was a daunting challenge and required the sustained involvement of elected representatives in their districts where they could be associated with the three-day anti-polio campaign starting on December 19.
Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali informed the Cabinet that the campaign would cover 84 districts and 40,000 teams would be mobilized to deliver vaccine to the children. She also highlighted that sincere and dedicated efforts of Governor of KPK and FATA Barrister Masood Kausar and Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti had led to reduction in the number of polio cases last year. She further added that 95% children under five years of age would be vaccinated during the upcoming campaign.
