Dhaka (UNA-OIC) Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammed Shahriar Alam received here on Wednesday a delegation consisting of officials from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and its Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC). The meeting held before the delegation’s visit to the Rohingya refugee camps.

The delegation was updated on the agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar to repatriate the Rohingya refugees who had fled Myanmar into Bangladesh to escape the violence against them and the persecution, murder, rape and the burning of their villages. The ministers stressed on the need to monitor the repatriation process and the return of the refugees in safety and dignity.

The senior officials of the foreign ministry also briefed the delegation about the human rights and humanitarian situation of over 650,000 Rohingya refugees in Cox Bazaar who arrived since August 2017, and the efforts of Bangladesh to meet their needs including shelter, food, healthcare and education.

Bangladesh already had around 300,000 refugees who fled the previous waves of violence. The delegation will be visiting Rohinhya refugees in Cox’s Bazaar on January 4-5 as part of a fact-finding mission to obtain first-hand information regarding the human rights violations suffered by them in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, and to assess the humanitarian needs of the refugees in the camps.
