Met Office identifies 24 valleys bearing potential risk of GLOF in northern areas of KP & GB

The Met Office has identified 24 valleys bearing potential risk of glacial lake outburst and flood activity in Gilgit Baltistan and northern areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to Director Pakistan Meteorological Department Dr. Khalid Malik, abrupt temperature increase and heatwave impacts may increase the potential threats and frequency of glacial lake outburst flood like incidents in the northern areas of the country during the summer.

Dr Malik said Shisper Glacier-like condition is not possible abruptly as the glacier started surging almost three years back and achieved the present stage after a due course of time.

Cholera outbreak controlled in Pir Koh, Dera Bugti: Report

The cholera epidemic has been controlled in Pir Koh and Dera Bugti.

According to a report presented a report to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif by the Balochistan government, only three patients are being treated at hospital while 3615 victims of cholera have been recovered from disease.

The outbreak of cholera in Pir Koh and Dera Bugti was caused by the use of water from a natural spring in Pathar Nalla.

The report further said that as per the direction of the Prime Minister, arrangements were made to stop the use of water.

It said natural spring now has been opened for non-drinking use.

Task force constituted to control forest fire in Sherani district

Under the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a task force headed by Secretary Forest and Wildlife Balochistan has been set up in Sherani district to control the forest fire.

An action report in this regard was submitted to the Prime Minister on Sunday by Balochistan Forests and Wildlife Department.

According to the report, teams have been formed in collaboration with federal and provincial departments to control the fire.

Commissioner Zhob has announced emergency in the area while Secretary Forest and Wildlife set up a control room to oversee the operation.

Rescue vehicles and firefighting equipment have been provided by NDMA and PDMA to control the fire.

Pakistan Army provided two helicopters and set up an Army base camp to assist in the operation.

LG by-polls on vacant seats held in KP

Local Bodies Elections on vacant seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which were postponed for various reasons, were held on Sunday.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, the polling took place in South Waziristan, North Waziristan, Kurram, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Batgram, Upper Kohistan and Malakand.

The polling took place in Six Tehsils and 26 Village and Neighborhood Councils for various seats.
