Wuhan Consensus: An Initiative for a New Geoscience Education was released

WUHAN, China, Nov. 7, 2022 /Xinhua-AsiaNet/– Celebrating its 70th anniversary on November 6, 2022, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) held International University Presidents’ Forum, themed “Habitable Earth: Mission and Challenges for Research Intensive Universities”.

Representatives from world-renowned research universities in Earth Science, principals of primary and secondary schools, and distinguished scholars from all over the world gathered in-person or online. The participants engaged in discussions on major challenges to the habitability of the Earth, and exchange of ideas on the mission, responsibilities and pathways of promoting the habitability of the Earth through education. China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) held International University Presidents’ Forum, themed “Habitable Earth: Mission and Challenges for Research Intensive Universities”.

The Consensus emphasizes that a shared future of mankind hinges on the habitability of the Earth. A shared future for mankind is determined by the habitability of the Earth. Due to the combined effects of the Earth’s own evolution and anthropogenic changes, a global shortage of energy resources, environmental pollution, climate change, frequent disasters and ecological damage become increasingly serious, threatening the livability of the Earth at unprecedented rates.

Modern Earth Science has made significant progresses and entered into the era of Earth System Science, with a focus on studying the past, present and future of a habitable Earth by looking into the deep Earth, deep sea, deep space and deep time.

Wuhan Consensus: An Initiative for a New Geoscience Education was released.

In response to the advancement of science and the call of the times, the Consensus advocates a renewed perception and definition of the role of mankind and its position and living style in the world under the multiverse outlook. The Consensus informs that all mankind should adjust and optimize the value system, knowledge system and dissemination system of geoscience education.

To form a more diversified, comprehensive and inclusive paradigm, under which theories, technologies and methods could be generated, contributing to green and low-carbon production and life styles.

The habitability of the Earth has long been wrecked in the “Anthropocene”. It is high time to initiate, facilitate and practice a brand-new geoscience education that helps to reposition humanity as one of the multitudinous participants and builders of a habitable Earth.

The Consensus calls on global universities, research institutions, primary and secondary schools, as well as all sectors of society for concerted actions to implement the new geoscience education and promote harmonious co-existence between man and nature in a timely manner.

In Nanfeng today, the lost memories of Baishe kiln are being pieced back together bit by bit. PM Shehbaz endorses UN Chief’s call for climate justice, climate solidarity

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guetteres on the sidelines of the COP-27 Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt on Monday.

Appreciating the Secretary-General for his solidarity and massive support to Pakistan in the wake of the devastating floods in the country, the Prime Minister reiterated that the unprecedented flood disaster in Pakistan is a clear manifestation of the challenge posed by climate change.

He endorsed the Secretary-General’s call for climate justice and climate solidarity.

The Prime Minister highlighted that Post Disaster Needs Assessment has estimated the damage caused by the floods in Pakistan to over 32 billion dollars which is around ten percent of the country’s GDP, therefore rehabilitation of flood hit areas would require substantial international support for Pakistan.

Referring to the adoption of UN General Assembly resolution expressing solidarity with Pakistan in the wake of flash floods, the Prime Minister said Pakistan looks forward to convening an international ‘pledging conference’ bringing together all development partners.

Shehbaz Sharif appreciated the creation of a UN inter agency team, led by the Deputy Secretary General, to help Pakistan prepare a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction Plan to be presented to the Conference.

About the COP-27 summit, the Prime Minister said it is a timely opportunity for the international community to catalyse concerted international action to mitigate the impact of climate change, and promote climate justice.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has thanked the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for creating a UN inter-agency team to prepare a comprehensive reconstruction plan for the flood affected areas.

In a tweet on Monday, he said that during a meeting with the UN Secretary General, they reviewed the task of rehabilitation of the flood affected people in Pakistan.

Shehbaz Sharif said the UN secretary general’s empathetic leadership is key to addressing climate change.

President stresses need to form committee to develop mental health helpline for patients

President Dr Arif Alvi has stressed the need to form a committee of public and private stakeholders to develop mental health helpline for patients.

Chairing a meeting on mental health in Islamabad on Monday, he said the committee constituted by Ministry of National Health Services should come up with a comprehensive plan to provide Mental Health counselling and services to the people who were facing mental health issues or disorders.

President stated Pakistan has limited resources to cope with the burden of mental health as an estimated 80 percent of people with Mental Health needs remain untreated.

He said that there is a need to increase the pool of psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors on a top priority basis to ensure the reach of mental health services to the target population.

The President underlined the need to develop and create mental health providers, especially at the primary level for the early diagnoses and treatment to arrest the illness at the initial stages.

Naveed Qamar elected President of Parliamentarians for Global Action

Minister for Commerce and Investments Syed Naveed Qamar has been elected President of Parliamentarians for Global Action, in the election held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He gained an overwhelming majority of over 90 percent votes against his rival Dip. Margarita Stobilzer, a very senior member of parliament of the host county.

Naveed Qamar is the first Pakistani Member of Parliament who is elected as president of Parliamentarians for Global Action for a two years term from 2023 to 2024.

On the occasion, Naveed Qamar pledged to mobilize parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy, rule of law, human rights, gender equality, climate and population issues.
