Lahore, February 08, 2023 (PPI-OT):Moazzam Ali Ghurki, President Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) suggested that digitalizing and revolutionizing small industries should be new SME Policy adopted by Pakistan, during a think tank session held at PCJCCI premises yesterday.

President PCJCCI added that it was in domestic markets and small industries that all sorts of innovation and entrepreneurship could take place which later would move out and lead to higher exports and foreign exchange earnings. Moazzam Ali Ghurki, President PCJCCI opined, “The small shopkeeper, the ‘rerhi wala’, the unskilled labourer contains the largest number of small and medium enterprises and if we make this sector boom we will have a more egalitarian development.” He also suggested that trade policy should not only be for promoting exports but for promoting all trade both at home and abroad. “We have to redesign our trade policy, centered to encourage competition, create opportunities and provide an enabling environment for domestic markets to flourish in an innovative and exciting new approach,” he maintained.

He also said that the domestic markets and small industries in Pakistan primarily included retail and wholesale traders, restaurants and hotels, construction, transport storage and communication, financial and real estate and personal services. This was sector where the poor and middle-class were hidden, he said adding “We do not need to reinvent the wheel, it is only through competition with foreign markets and services that our domestic markets will improve and benefit through knowledge spillovers, learning by doing and exposure to new technologies and management systems.

Hamza Khalid, Vice President PCJCCI said that the public and private sector should follow a vibrant vision of transforming Pakistani cities into a dynamic commercial hub of the region- a tourist destination, a shopping centre, regional headquarters for Multinational Corporation etc. “We in Pakistan must encourage fresh thinking and allow technical people into government to make good things happen. While, Moazzam Ghurki highlighted that before policy making, it should be investigated that why locally successful brands had been unable to become well-recognized brands globally. He appreciated Afridi’s idea of more small markets and bazaars for local vendors and traders and said that bazaars not only provide new opportunities and space to set up business for entrepreneurs but also promote local arts and crafts and attract tourists, which generates valuable foreign exchange for the economy.

Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI agreed that the proposed strategy should be focused on improving the quality and quantity of wholesale and retail outlets, ultimately linked to urban management and land use. PM’s Relief Fund for Turkiye Earthquake victims established

Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for Turkiye Earthquake Victims, G-12166, has been officially established.

Office of the Controller General of Accounts has issued notification in this regard.

The decision to establish the fund was taken at a meeting of federal cabinet in Islamabad today.

Chairing the Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appealed the people to generously donate for the earthquake victims in Turkiye.

The cabinet members also announced to donate their one month salary to the relief fund.

The meeting decided that government employees from Grade 18 to 22 will donate their one-day pay to the fund.

The Prime Minister briefed the cabinet members about his telephonic conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan immediately after the earthquake, in which he expressed his deep grief over the devastation caused by the earthquake and assured of his full cooperation to the government and people of Turkiye.

The Prime Minister said PIA and Pakistan Air Force flights carrying relief goods, rescue teams, doctors and paramedics have left for Turkiye and delivery of more relief supplies will continue.

At the outset of the meeting, the Cabinet prayed for the victims of earthquake in Turkiye and Syria and speedy recovery of the injured.

The Cabinet also set up a committee headed by Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar to review the Criminal Laws Amendment Bill 2023 sent by the Ministry of Interior.

Dar apprises Korean envoy of potential investment areas

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has said that present government is focusing on various other avenues of mutual interest so that the existing bilateral relations could be extending to a new level.

Talking to Ambassador of South Korea Suh Sangpyo in Islamabad, the Finance Minister shared the depth of friendly relations between Pakistan and South Korea.

He highlighted the bilateral ties between both the countries in areas of trade, investment, human exchange and development cooperation.

He apprised the ambassador about the potential investment areas.

Senior Korean diplomat expressed a keen interest in enhancing and strengthening the bilateral ties between both the countries especially in trade and investment.

Pakistan to extend possible help to Syria for relief, rehabilitation: Shakoor

Minister for Religious Affairs Mufti Abdul Shakoor has said that all possible help would be extended to the Syrian people for their relief and rehabilitation.

He gave the assurance during a meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Ramez Alraee who called on him in Islamabad.

The Minister offered Fateha and prayed for the victims of the deadliest earthquake in Syria.

The minister said the land of Syria was a religious and cultural center and rendered immense services to Islam.

He said the ministry wanted to coordinate and improve the system of Pakistani pilgrims to Syria.

Bilateral issues and pilgrimage management policy were discussed in detail between the two leaders.

The Syrian ambassador said President Bashar al-Assad and his government attached great importance to the relations with Pakistan.

He said there would be cooperation between the two countries for the exchange of academic delegations and religious scholars, besides the Holy Quran reciters and memorizers.
