Speaker National Assembly and Parliamentarians call on Prime Minster Gilani

Islamabad: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that the Government has truly empowered Parliament as a sovereign institution. He said that unanimous adoption of 18th and 19th Constitutional Amendments and a number of resolutions is a proof of Parliament’s active role to steer the nation out of the present difficulties.

The Prime Minister expressed these views while talking to Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly and a group of Parliamentarians who called on him separately at his Parliament House Chamber today.

The Prime Minister observed that Government has introduced a number of measures to provide relief to common man. Adequate resources have been allocated for public sector development in the budget for Financial Year 2011-12. He maintained that those projects which are near to completion have been prioritized in this budget. The timely completion of these projects will help generate economic activity and will help raise standard of living of masses, he added.

The Prime Minister said that PPP leadership gave first unanimous constitution to the country and introduced culture of tolerance in politics. Our party, he maintained, believes in parliamentary and democratic norms and we will not reciprocate the un-parliamentary behaviour displayed by the opposition parties in National Assembly during budget speech. PPP will abide by the democratic norms during budget session of the Punjab Government, he added.

The Prime Minister urged the Parliamentarians to work for promotion of democratic norms in the society. He also asked them to personally monitor the completion of development projects and maintain a close liaison with the people to know their problems.

The Parliamentarians appreciated the contours of the budget and said that presentation of a balanced budget in such difficult circumstances is an achievement. They apprised the Prime Minister about status of development projects in their respective constituencies and also discussed issues relating to the welfare of the common people.

The Parliamentarians included Nawab Liaqat Ali Khan MNA, Ms. Shagufta Jumani MNA, Ghulam Bibi Bharwana MNA, Mr. Abdul Ghani Talpur MNA and Mr. Mehboob Sultan MNA.
