Commander-in-Chief of Ground Forces of Russian Federation calls on Secretary Defence

Islamabad, August 05 2013 (PPI-OT): Colonel General Vladimir V. Chirkin, Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation called on Secretary Defence Lt. Gen. Retd. Asif Yasin Malik here in his office today.

Secretary Defence has said that Russia and Pakistan have historic ties and Pakistan appreciates greater Russian role in the region as well as in global affairs. Russia has supported Pakistan’s membership of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for which Pakistan thanked Russia for its cooperation. Pakistan and Russia also focused on the need to explore new possibilities and avenues in field of military training and mutual exchanges between Russian and Pakistan Organizations, he added.

Secretary Defence acknowledged the strategic convergence of views between the two countries on emerging regional situation in Afghanistan, Central Asian States, Extremism and Energy Corridors.

Secretary Defence reiterated the resolve of Pakistan to fight the menace of terrorism. Future concerns on Post-2014 situation of Afghanistan and its implications on peace and security in the region were also discussed.

Visiting General lauded the role of Pakistan in combating the existing challenges facing the region. He assured that Russian Federation would play affective role in improving the security situation post- 2014.
