Wheat Traders Association of Pakistan concerned on Tariff and Free Trade of Wheat
Karachi, August 16, 2013 (PPI-OT): Wheat Traders Association of Pakistan (WTAP) believes that the EEC Decision (as reported in the press) based on FBR recommendation will result in a significant setback to all Pakistanis, this was stated by WTAP’s Secretary, Saleem Ahmed in a press statement here on Friday.
It must be emphasized that the country has not met its wheat production target and consequently PASSCO and Provincial Food Departments have only met 70 – 75% of their procurement targets. Wheat is a staple food item whose pricing effects the poor man profoundly, Saleem added.
WTAP requests the govt. (EEC) to reconsider and reduce the Withholding Tax on all wheat imports to 1% and ensure that only quality wheat is imported and prices not only remain in check but decline to previous levels. He supplemented that the government needs to facilitate an open wheat trade policy in the country by the private sector.
Needless to say on food items placing tariffs, restricting imports and exports, not allowing movement both inter provincial and inter district, unnecessary checking on wheat stocks and movements will have the opposite effect with tightness in stocks and faster escalating of prices. On behalf of WTAP, Saleem strongly urges its proposal should be given serious consideration.
