Notables from Gilgit-Baltistan call on President
Islamabad, February 24, 2014 (PPI-OT): President Mamnoon Hussain has said that Pak-China Economic Corridor would usher a new era of socio-economic development in the region and would open new vistas of opportunities especially for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. The President said that the Corridor would not only generate tremendous economic opportunities but would also be instrumental in further promoting tourism potential of Gilgit-Baltistan.
This he said while talking to a delegation comprising of notables from Gilgit-Baltistan here at Aiwan-e-Sadr today. Those who were present during the meeting included among others Mr. Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Haji Ibrahim Sanai, Mr. Sultan Ali Khan, Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman, Ms. Amina Ali, Mr. Tahir Shigri, Haji Shamsher Ali, Mr. Muhammad Sabit Khan, Mr. Abdul Wahab, Mr. Suleman Asad, Haji Fida Mohammad Nashad and others.
Addressing the meeting, the President said that the Government was committed towards the uplift of Gilgit-Baltistan and was taking various measures for the development of the region and socio-economic betterment of the people.
Referring to his recent visit to China, the President said that his meetings with the top leadership of China focused on prioritization and early completion of those projects that have direct and immediate benefits for the people of this region.
The President said that completion of dams in the area would also serve to directly benefit the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and would help in overcoming the current challenge of energy shortage in the country.
Discussing overall situation in the country, the President said that the Government was faced with various challenges including the issue of militancy and terrorism, revival of economy, energy shortage etc., and was taking all possible measures to address these challenges.
Earlier, Mr. Muhammad Barjees Tahir, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan in his remarks highlighted various issues pertaining to Gilgit-Baltistan and the efforts afoot to address those issues.
Later, the meeting turned into an interactive session where the participants highlighted various issues concerning the region including the issues faced by the people in health and education sector. The participants also invited the President to visit Gilgit-Baltistan during the Silk-Route Festival.
