Karachi, November 25, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Acting President of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Mr. Shaukat Ahmed urged the government to announce immediately the necessary directives for the Thar region and other affected districts of Sindh which are facing severe drought and famine. This drought and famine has created the problem of food insecurity and water crisis.

He stated that Global warming and manifestations of climate changes is the main reason that has reduced frequency and intensity of rainfall which is eroding the socio-economic system of Thar region and this is happening for two to three years in every ten year cycle.

He said that due to negligence the problem of Thar has severely increased with the passage of time. Thar district has a lot of natural resources and has the capacity to feed its people but due to non-sustainable and short-sighted policies the people are deprived of their agriculture, livestock, crops and other sources of livelihood and sustainability.

He further added that all leading officials of the government should visit immediately to the Thar deserts for resolving the problems of malnutrition, poverty and diseases. Moreover, FPCCI has also Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department which is working in the Thar region for providing necessities to the affected people. The government can also collaborate with the FPCCI for resolving the problems of dry region of Thar on long term basis, he said.

Mr. Shaukat Ahmed further stated that the drought conditions adversely affected the livestock, which is the main livelihood of the populations after cultivation of crops. A part from human being, Thar regions also needs attention for the safety of livestock. Through a good and right policies and measures, a natural calamity of Sindh region can be minimized from turning into a further human disaster, he added.

He said that the media is doing good job to highlight the suffering people of Thar region, but this create wrong image of Pakistan internationally regarding the human resource development. Pakistan is already at very low rank (147th out of 187th) in the human development index. Poverty, malnutrition, infant mortality and lack of ease of clean water can deteriorate further our ranking in human development.

The current situation in the Thar region is alarming with households facing serious problems of food security and nutrition, and is not likely to improve in the near future, unless urgent and scaled up humanitarian response is provided to the affected populations. He further stated that government should take early measures for the Thar affected people by provision of food, water and medical facilities.
