Be First!

Islamabad: The Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF) was launched in New York on Thursday. It will be a new, informal, multilateral counter-terrorism platform with a focus on identifying critical counter-terrorism needs and with a framework for mobilizing the expertise and resources for meeting those needs, says a press release received here today from New York.

The thirty founding members of the GCTF are: Algeria, Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Denmark, Egypt, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of the GCTF, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar said that it was an appropriate occasion to reaffirm our commitment to uphold the noble ideals of tolerance, humanity, brotherhood, and harmony among all religions, faiths and cultures. It was also the moment to reflect where do we stand in the struggle against terrorism ten years down the line?

She drew world attention to the loss of 35,000 men, women, and children including 5,000 personnel of\ security forces in the ongoing effort against terrorism. She said that one lesson one can draw from success of law enforcement operations in Swat was that political ownership and national consensus were critical in defeating extremism and terrorism.

She stressed that recognition of Pakistan’s sacrifices and understanding of inherent complexities of the challenges was crucial in pursuing the shared objectives.

She called for developing a simple, direct and effective counter-narrative to mobilize public support against misguided agenda of extremists and terrorists.

As the country most seriously affected by terrorism, she reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to strengthen cooperation with the international community for the elimination of terrorism.

She also assured full cooperation to the international community in making the GCTF a true success.
