Ahsan Iqbal Advocates for Broader Focus in Pakistani Media Beyond Politics.

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, addressed a distinguished audience at the Summit on “Journalism of The Future” by DW in Islamabad. As Chief Guest, Prof. Iqbal highlighted the need for media to adapt to rapid technological changes while maintaining journalistic responsibility. In his remarks, he discussed the shift from mass media to micro-media platforms, driven by digital innovations, and its effects on global misinformation and societal divides.

According to Press Information Department, Prof. Iqbal noted the constraints on freedom of speech in the West and emphasized the importance of respecting Pakistan’s cultural and religious values. He advocated for a balanced approach to free expression, considering societal norms and local contexts. Addressing the issues of misinformation and hate speech on social media, he shared his personal experience with a hate-fueled attack, calling for regulatory frameworks to curb misuse while protecting freedoms.

Prof. Iqbal also discussed the growing influence of artificial intelligence in journalism, predicting that a significant portion of stories might soon be AI-generated. He urged the industry to manage this change responsibly, preserving journalistic ethics and human oversight. Emphasizing the need for diversification, the Minister encouraged Pakistani media to cover topics beyond politics, such as tourism, culture, and economic stories, to reflect a changing society.

In his conclusion, Prof. Iqbal praised the resilience of Pakistani journalists and called for collaborative efforts among media professionals, policymakers, and tech leaders to foster a balanced, ethical, and influential media environment in Pakistan.
