All Pakistan Newspaper Society urges government to withdraw General Sales Tax on advertisement of newspapers
Karachi: The APNS has urged upon the Government of Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa to withdraw the proposed General Sales Tax on the advertisements in newspapers and magazines to help the newspapers of the Province in facing acute financial crunch.
Sarmad Ali, Secretary General APNS has stated that the newspapers in Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa will have to bear the heavy burden of taxation in the present day recessionary economic conditions. During the current year, newsprint prices in the international market sky-rocketed raising the costs up to more than 50 percent. Furthermore, the consistent devaluation of the rupee and debilitating increases in the costs of other inputs such as printing inks, printing plates, photograph films, printing plants, pre-press equipment and spare parts have consequently resulted in a severe cash-flow crisis for the publishing firms of the Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa Province.
The APNS stated that in Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa, the publications mostly depend on the government advertisements as there is hardly any private business generated in the province thus the levy of 16% GST would badly affect their economies as it would practically reduce the quantum of government advertisements by 16%. The newspapers are already facing financial crunch due to non-payment of their bills by the provincial administration for long.
The APNS has also pointed out that the newspapers in the province have to work in a conflict region where warlike situation persists perpetually for last 04 years. In these circumstances, the newspapers have to face hardships to accomplish their professional duties to disseminate the news and information among their readers.
The APNS is of the considered opinion that the newspapers in KPK require maximum support of the Government. It, therefore, requests Mr. Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtoon Khwa to exempt the levy of GST on newspaper advertisements to save fourth pillar of the state from disaster.
