AMU Students Contest Hostel Eviction Notice Amid Summer Break

Aligarh, Students and research scholars at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are expressing dismay over a recent administrative notice requiring them to vacate campus hostels during the summer break. This directive has particularly unsettled female students and those engaged in ongoing research projects, with complaints about the practical difficulties and timing of the move.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the AMU administration has mandated the hostel evacuation to commence on June 16, coinciding with the start of the university’s summer vacation. This decision has triggered widespread concern among students, who have made several appeals to the university’s vice-chancellor and registrar for permission to remain in their accommodations.

The students’ grievances highlight the harsh weather conditions, with temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius, and the logistical challenges posed by the upcoming National Eligibility Test (NET) scheduled for June 18. One senior student, speaking on condition of anonymity, voiced frustration over the lack of viable alternatives for those whose exam centers are located in Aligarh. “We can’t return to Bihar because the exam center is here,” he explained.

While the administration has proposed the creation of a dedicated summer hostel for students with impending competitive exams, the promise has been met with skepticism. Students argue that no such facilities have been prepared and insist on staying in their current hostels. They also suggest that the administration should focus on addressing illegal accommodations within the campus rather than displacing legitimate residents.

The university has announced a summer vacation from June 16 to July 30, affecting the main campus as well as its centers in Malappuram, Murshidabad, and Kishanganj. The success of the administration’s eviction strategy as the deadline approaches remains uncertain.
