Riyadh: Amb. A M Shahid (Former Diplomat) has commented on the recent tensions in the Gulf region, emphasizing Iran's retaliatory attacks on US bases located in various Gulf states. Tehran has clarified that its military actions were directed solely at US installations, following strikes by the US and Israel. Recently, the Iranian President issued an apology to the affected Gulf nations, including a commitment not to target Saudi Arabia and others, provided these states refrain from hosting attacks on Iran. According to Radio Pakistan, the ongoing diplomatic efforts by Pakistan, led by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir's visit to Saudi Arabia, aim to reinforce the Pakistan-KSA defence pact amidst the regional tensions. The hope is that the agreement will remain dormant due to Pakistan's active diplomatic engagements with Iran. The Iranian response was prompted by substantial losses incurred during the initial US and Israeli strikes. Hence, Iran's actions were framed as a necessary response to what it views as ag gression. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has communicated with Iranian leaders via telephone, urging restraint and discouraging attacks on neighboring countries. The former diplomat, Amb. A M Shahid, expressed concerns that some Iranian decisions, made in response to their losses, might ultimately harm their long-term interests. Furthermore, Pakistan has decided to participate in upcoming Commonwealth meetings in London, despite the evolving regional dynamics. The High Commissioner in London has been authorized to represent Pakistan, ensuring that the country's position is effectively communicated on the international stage.
