Roundtable: U.S.-Mexico Bilateral Forum on Higher Education, Research, and Innovation

The U.S. Department of State is proud to note its participation in this year’s U.S.-Mexico Bilateral Forum on Higher Education, Innovation, and Research Roundtable. The Bilateral Forum�often known by its acronym in Spanish FOBESII�is an excellent example of how public-private partnerships can promote education and research to stimulate innovation and support economic prosperity in both countries.

This year’s roundtable is hosted by the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C. Speakers at this year’s roundtable include U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson (via a recorded video message) and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Mara Tekach from the U.S. government, and Ambassador of Mexico to the United States Geronimo Gutierrez from the Mexican government. Participants include representatives from private industry, academic institutions, U.S. and Mexican government officials, and nongovernmental organizations from both sides of the border. Although the event is closed to the press, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars will release a publicly available report summarizing the results and recommendations from the roundtable.

Jordanian, German ministers discuss cooperation in agricultural field

Amman (IINA) � Jordanian Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat discussed here with German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Christian Schmidt and the accompanying delegation about the means to forge closer cooperation in the fields of agriculture and the efficient use of water.

Hneifat briefed the German delegation on Jordan’s agricultural sector, and problems facing the Kingdom’s exports due to the current political situation in the region, mainly in Iraq and Syria, Petra reported.

“The biggest challenge facing the agricultural sector is the halt in exports to Iraq,” he said, noting that 80 percent of the exports used to go to Iraq. The minister said that agricultural production reaches $4 billion annually through the consumption of 1 billion cubic meters of water.

The German minister voiced his country’s appreciation of efforts exerted by Jordan to host Syrian refugees and provide them with services.

He said that Germany has joint projects with the Jordanian government in the agricultural field and in improving water utilization efficiency.
