Islamabad, December 07, 2012 (PPI-OT): Over three million people in Pakistan will benefit from winter assistance from the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID).

As temperatures plummet in Khyber Paktunkwa (KP) over 1 million internally displaced people (IDPs) are living with inadequate shelter, food and water, and are vulnerable to disease and malnutrition. It is estimated that there are many hundreds of thousands more unregistered IDPs in the region.

UK aid will assist 1.4 million with critical water, sanitation, health and nutrition services. The UK will also support improved livelihoods opportunities for over 100,000 people living outside temporary camps and to the communities hosting them.

This year, floods in Sindh affected nearly five million people. Using emergency shelter materials deployed in advance, the UK provided urgent emergency assistance to 146,000 (21,000 families) within days, but 1.7 million people (274, 000 families) are still living in temporary camps.

UK aid will support communities in Sindh, Northern Punjab and Balochistan by providing:

• Food ration packs for over a million people (156,000 families) until the end of 2012;
• Emergency shelter for over 250,000 people (41,000 families);
• Winter kits (blankets, solar lights, shawls etc) for 162,500 people (25,000 families);
• Water, basic sanitation and hygiene for 686,000 people (104,000 families).

George Turkington, Head of Office for DFID Pakistan said:

“It is deeply concerning that families, women and children are living in temporary accommodation as the winter sets in. The UK is providing additional shelter, special winter kits, and access to water, health and nutrition, to help get those who are most vulnerable through these cold months. The UK and Pakistan share a deep bond and friendship – we will always stand by and support each other.”
