City Government Gears Up for Expected Cyclone
Karachi: Emergency has been declared in city government and all concerned organizations as a preventive measure ahead of forecast of heavy rains and tropical cyclone in Karachi. Leaves of officers and staff were cancelled and they have been directed to remain present on their duties.
An emergency control and information centre has been set up in the DCO Camp office to start relief work without delay in any emergency situation.
All necessary arrangements were made for shifting of affectees to safe places especially those residing in islands and on coastal belt.
Emergency relief camps have been established with all necessities of life including food and medicines. EDO Municipal Services Masood Alam has been appointed as focal person for all these works by Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed. He would ensure full coordination among various organization doing relief works.
These decisions were taken in a high level meeting held under the chairmanship of Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by representative of KPT, Port Qasim Authority, KESC, SSGC, PTCL, Live Stock, Fisheries department, PDMA, Meteorological department, SBCA, Corps-V, Pakistan Rangers, Pakistan Coat Guards, Police, Karachi Fish Harbour Authority, KW and SB, Traffic Police and Cantonment Boards. EDOs of city government Karachi and town administrators also attended the meeting.
During the meeting preventive measures that have been taken ahead of expected cyclone and the method to create better coordination among various organizations were reviewed in detail.
The meeting was informed that city government has made its municipal services staff alert and they were ready to take action with more than 300 vehicles and machinery in case of any emergency situation.
The required machinery will be stationed at Civic Centre while the town administration and other organizations have also arranged such machinery. Makeshift relief camps have been set up in different areas to provide shelter to residents of coastal areas and islands. EDO Revenue and EDO Health have been given the task to complete all necessary arrangements in these relief camps.
Addressing the meeting Administrator Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed said that places for setting up of relief camps should be identified for affectees of coastal areas including Bin Qasim, Keamari, Gadap and Korangi Town so that immediate operation could be launched in case of any emergency situation. He also told the town administrators to work out emergency plan for coastal areas falling within their jurisdiction so that any difficulty in the smooth operation could be removed in advance.
Administrator Karachi said that shifting arrangements for people residing at the edges of Orangi, Gujjar Nullah, Malir River should also be done. He said that every organization should appoint a focal person in this connection who would ensure continuous coordination with the central control room in DCO Camp Office.
