Islamabad: Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik has announced that the government is implementing concrete measures to curb pollution by upgrading oil refineries, promoting electric vehicles, and strengthening public transport. According to Radio Pakistan, the Minister, during a ceremony in Islamabad, stated that a new policy has been approved under which refineries will be upgraded to produce petroleum products meeting Euro-five quality standards. He emphasized that this improvement in fuel quality is expected to significantly reduce transport-related pollution and enhance air quality in the country. The Minister added that the government is on the verge of introducing a new automotive policy focused on electric vehicles. This initiative aims to facilitate a major shift towards electric vehicles and battery-based transport in Pakistan. Furthermore, the government is promoting environmentally friendly public transport options, including the introduction of electric buses. Initiatives such as pink moto rcycles and scooters for women are also being encouraged to improve mobility and economic opportunities. Musadik Malik stressed that refineries must upgrade their facilities or face closure, indicating that the government will not tolerate any delays in this initiative. He also outlined measures to control industrial and agricultural pollution, highlighting actions against polluting brick kilns, marble factories, and crop burning. The Minister noted that the government is actively encouraging the use of biogas and other sustainable materials as part of a broader effort to reduce the country's environmental burden and ensure long-term climate sustainability.
