Contemporary Art Exhibition at Pakistan High Commission 29- 31 July 2011
Islamabad: An exhibition of 19 contemporary Pakistani artists will be inaugurated by the High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan on Friday the 29th at 6:00 p.m at the Pakistan High Commission London. Entitled ‘Art from Pakistan’ the exhibition sponsored by Unicorn Art Gallery showcases emerging talent and best of contemporary artworks from Pakistan. The event is being coordinated and organized by artist Soraya Sikandar, says a press release received from London here today.
The exhibition features a diverse selection of artworks including: portraits, calligraphies, abstract, landscapes, etc. and approaches a wide-range of subject area including: socially-conscious art, indigenous art, representational art – with each selected work threaded together in this exclusive exhibition which runs from 29th of July (opening at 6pm) and on till the 31st (2 pm to 8 pm). The artworks produced for this exhibition share the commonality of being a response to a changing world, and bringing change to the precinct of tradition. Among the 19th artists who are participating in the exhibition are Soraya Sikander Mr. Aakif Suri, Mr. Khadim Ali, Ms. Maryam Khursheed, Mr. Mansoor Rahi, Mr. Mashmoor Raza, Ms. Mona Naqsh.
The organizer of the exhibition visual artist, Soraya Sikander will be present for the occasion.
Soraya Sikander is a prolific artist, who has worked, over the past couple of years in a variety of styles and techniques including: landscapes painted in oil on canvas, Japanese woodblocks inspired ink drawings on wall and paper, photography, video-stills and performing arts. She counters the theme of war, presenting the opposite side of the argument. The artist works on location in Karachi and uses imagery of everyday scenes, interpreting these in various media to create ingenious works of art. Soraya’s current body of works comprises of video installation and stencil, graffiti on paper, canvas and wall. The artist’s work is a visual commentary on urban existence.
In 2009 Soraya exhibited her post-cubist painting and drawings at the prestigious Dhaka museum – The National Gallery of Art. She has held two solo exhibitions and five group shows including in the U.A.E, Dhaka, Singapore and Karachi, and has contributed her work to a charity auction. This is her ninth exhibition. Soraya Sikander graduated from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore in 2008.
