Country needs 150 billion dollars exports in next ten years from present 25 billion dollars for sustainable economic growth: Ahsan Iqbal
Islamabad, October 16, 2015 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal has said that country needs 150 billion dollars exports in next ten years from present 25 billion dollars for sustainable economic growth. The target though looks ambitious but is quite possible with the endowments and resources we have. It can be achieved with the collaboration between public sector, private sector and academia.
He stated this while speaking as chief guest at the concluding session of 14th International Symposium on Advanced Materials here today at National Centre for Physics. He said that ambitious target of 150 billion dollars can be achieved by switching over to high-tech products and adding value to our existing export sectors. Scientific research and innovations can play vital role to make progress in this arena.
Minister pointed out that this is the era of knowledge economy and present government realizing the need of knowledge based economy laid great emphasis in its Vision-2025 to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
Minister stated, “We have pool of eminent scientists and engineers who are contributing significantly to national development. Presently we have 7500 PhDs, we need to produce 10000 PhDs in next ten years. For achieving this target we are negotiating knowledge corridors with different developed countries to send our students for learning from the scientific and technological advancements of these countries”.
Talking about the aims and objectives of research Ahsan Iqbal opined that research should target economic performance, health and education sectors with focus on environmental well being. Emphasis should be on issues of importance to which an increased research effort and focus should make a difference.
He said that constant, unhindered and ensured water supply in sufficient quantity for domestic, industrial and agriculture is a burning issue. While mega projects are under consideration to build water reservoirs, the sector offers immense potential for engineers and metallurgists to come up with the alternative engineering materials, specifically designed.
He particularly called upon the young scientists to join hands with the government to take the country in top 25 economies of the world in next ten years and top ten strong economies by 2047 when country would be celebrating the hundred years of its independence.
