Delegation of Gujrat District Bar calls on Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan

Islamabad: “Legal profession is not a mere vocation but an onerous responsibility”, said the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while talking to a 35 Member delegation of Gujrat District Bar headed by its President Mr. Haji Javed Akhtar, Mr. Khadim Hussain Qasir, ASC and Mr. Shafqat Ullah Cheema, General Secretary and consisting of other office bearers and Executive Members who called on his lordship today i.e. 24.05.2011 in Supreme Court Building, Islamabad.

Praising the role of Gujrat Bar in the days of Judges restoration movement, his lordship said “the Bar has special affiliation with courts and it left no stone unturned to support the movement of restoration of independent judiciary, rule of law and supremacy of constitution in country. The movement culminated in the restoration of the independent judiciary in country. Due to the commitment, selflessness and devotion of the legal fraternity, the movement gained familiarity into the other countries of the world including England, France and Australia that is why on 14.11.2007, members of New York Bar Association came out to march on roads as a gesture of solidarity with the lawyers of Pakistan”.

The Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry further added “it was a movement that instilled the spirit in the legal fraternity to achieve the cause of Constitutionalism. This spirit caused the restoration of judiciary as well as democracy in the country. The movement caused awareness amongst the masses to fight for their rights and engendered the belief in rule of law and supremacy of constitution. The lawyers who made sacrifices and played a valuable role in the movement are the role model for future generation”.

The delegation also lauded untiring efforts of the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for his commitment and sincerity towards his profession and appreciated the stand taken by his lordship on principles which was very firm and beacon of light for the rest of the judiciary.

The Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan reciprocated the sentiments and praised their sacrifices due to which the movement was kept alive and the message of Rule of law and supremacy of Constitution spread in every nook and corner of the country. The members discussed the issues and matters of interest of legal/judicial fraternity and informed his lordship about the hardships faced by them and requested for construction of chambers, establishment of Federal and Provincial special courts like Banking, Anti-corruption and FIA courts. They further requested for shifting of Consumer court in the vicinity of existing court premises to facilitate the lawyers and litigants.

The Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan assured them to take up the matter with concerned authorities. They also praised his lordship’s efforts for the cause of dispensation of justice and told that his lordship is a ray of hope for society and fountain of wisdom for lawyers and prayed for his long life. Recounting the days of struggle during the movement, they informed his lordship that it was the vision and the inspiring leadership of his lordship that brought lawyers together on a platform and they achieved the goal in shape of restoration of independent judiciary.

The delegation invited his lordship to visit the Gujrat District Bar. The Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan thanked them, accepted invitation and assured them to visit the Bar soon.
