Demands for an early call of session of the Dispute resolution committee

Be First!

Karachi: The KESC has emphasized upon the governmental mediating authorities to call for the maiden session of the Dispute Resolution Committee at the earliest possible. This call from KESC is in the spirit to swiftly move towards seeking a resolution to the pending and long outstanding issues between the utility and the surplus, non-core workers.

The KESC management has already since shared its nominations for the DRC, while the unfortunate hurdle in the first session going through has been the delay in the nominations by the labour union. The procrastination by the labour union has not only led to the lagging of the process but also is a reflection of the seriousness of intent.

The initial nominations submitted by the labour union were questionable in nature, as the basic requirement of the nominees to be from amongst ‘current and serving’ employment status could not be met.

The nominees for the DRC as mutually agreed had to be workers / members of the union, who were neither charge-sheeted nor dismissed from duty, nor facing any disciplinary action – following which the labour union till date has not been able to come up with any nominees fulfilling the above basic requirement. In order to ensure fair representation across the board it was also opined that nominations include personnel from majority of union bodies if not all.

An important consideration has also been the fact, that the labour union despite being signatories on the agreement, with the promise to refrain from any measures that would hamper the normal functioning and discharge of responsibility, have on a number of occasion resorted to actions that have been subversive and coercive in nature, which is in effect contrary to the spirit of the very agreement.

Despite all such accounts the KESC management has been upholding the statutes on their end and has even disbursed funds to the surplus pool workers under the ‘Relief Package’ as a humanitarian gesture, that was announced keeping in mind the month of Ramazan.
