Democracy imperative for peace, stability and development
Islamabad: Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker, National Assembly has said that political leadership should forge unity and join hands in order to take Pakistan out of the present quagmire. She said this in her statement on the International Democracy Day being commemorated worldwide under the auspicious of United Nations on 15th September (today).
The Speaker said that democracy was a universal value, based on the freely expressed will of the people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural system and their full participation in all aspects of life in order to achieve this objective, it is incumbent upon the political leadership to shun their political differences and join hands to strengthen the democratic process in the country.
Dr. Fehmida Mirza stressing the continued need for promotion of democratization and development of the political system in the country. She said that democracy, peace, development and respect for human rights are inter-dependent phenomena and therefore, it is imperative for democracy to flourish in the country. She said that the people’s participation in the affairs of the country would ensure fundamental independence, equality, achievements of the needs of the people and restoration of law and order.
She said that involvement of the people in public affairs of the country ensures basic freedom and equality, fulfilment of needs of people and preserve or restore peace.
The Speaker said that the ultimate goal of democracy is to preserve and promote the dignity and fundamental rights of the individuals, to achieve social justice, foster the economic and social development of the community, strengthen the cohesion of society and building a propitious environment for international peace. She said that continuous electoral process ensures a democratic dispensation in the country.
Paying rich tributes to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, the Speaker said, she embraced martyrdom in her struggle for restoration of democracy and rights of the people. She said her mission would be carried forward by the present democratic dispensation in the country.
