Egypt’s Sisi meets US State Secretary in Cairo
Cairo Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met here on Thursday with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is currently visiting Egypt as part of an eight-nation tour in the Middle East.
Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Bassam Radi said in a statement that during the meeting, the two sides emphasized the depth of the longstanding US-Egyptian strategic partnership, and the importance of continued joint coordination and consultation on political and security issues in the region.
According to Ahram Online, Pompeo is set to hold a press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry after the Cairo meeting. He will also meet with a number of Egyptian officials during his visit, including General Intelligence Service Director Abbas Kamel.
The US Secretary of State embarked on his Middle East tour with visiting Jordan on Tuesday. The trip focuses on Syria, Iran and Yemen as well as US bilateral relations with Arab countries.
In Cairo, Pompeo will meet with Egyptian officials to discuss economic and energy cooperation as well as major regional issues including Iran, Gaza and counterterrorism, the US State Department said.
