Foreign Secretary William Hague’s meeting with President Zardari of Pakistan

London: Foreign Secretary William Hague and President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari discussed key foreign policy issues and the close cooperation between the UK and Pakistan.

Foreign Secretary William Hague met the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari in London on 30th June. They discussed the close cooperation between the UK and Pakistan, including the commitment to increase trade and investment between the two nations as part of the strategic dialogue. President Zardari commended the United Kingdom on its continued support following last year’s floods and for its support to education and development in Pakistan. The Foreign Secretary acknowledged the huge sacrifices made by Pakistan in fighting terrorism and recognised the importance of consolidating these efforts. They also discussed key foreign policy issues.

The Foreign Secretary said:

“I was honoured to welcome President Zardari to London. We spoke at length about our strong bilateral relationship and the progress being made against each of the strands of the enhanced strategic dialogue. I reiterated the UK’s continued support for Pakistan in addressing the challenges she faces. We also discussed the strengthened cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan, including the recent ratification of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Trade and Transit Agreement , which will help improve peace and stability on both sides of the border. Pakistan remains a vital partner and our co-operation benefits both our countries.”
