Giligt-Baltistan Government working under tough situation: Wattoo
Islamabad, November 05, 2012 (PPI-OT): Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo has said that Gilgit-Baltistan Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah is working under tough situation and we are committed to extend every possible help to them.
He said this while chairing a meeting of Special Committee for Law and Order in Gilgit-Baltistan constituted on the directions of Prime Minister of Pakistan. Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan, Syed Mehdi Shah, Secretary Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan, IG Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa, DG Gilgit Scouts, Additional Secretary Ministry of Defense and other high official of the relevant department were also present in the meeting.
Minister was briefed on the Law and Order situation in the Gilgit-Baltistan region and other related issues. It was told that the culprits of the Kohistan incident have been identified and their arrest warrants have been issued. The minister constituted a Joint Investigation Team of senior officers of KPK Police and GB Police and other relevant department to apprehend the culprits and present them before the courts within a one month time.
The Minister also directed to notify a high powered ‘Crisis Management Committee’ for Law and Order in GB, consisting of representatives from Federal Government, KPK Government, GB Government and the relevant agencies. This committee will meet once in a month to review over all Law and order situation in the region and take necessary measure to control any uncalled for situation in the region.
The minister was told that the Army Chief during his visit to Gilgit-Baltistan has provided weapons, as goodwill gesture, to the GB Police. The minister appreciated the goodwill gesture of the Army Chief and thanked him. Wattoo assured that more weapons and security equipment will be provided to the GB Police to properly equip them to maintain law and order in the region.
The Special Committee also recommended the provision of a special security purpose helicopter to the Gilgit-Baltistan government for the quick response in the crisis situation. The safety and security issues of Korakuram Highway were also discussed in detail and it was agreed that a special Federal Task Force on the pattern of Motor Ways and High Ways Police be made for the protection of the passenger on the Korakuram Highway.
Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo directed that a mechanism be evolved to check the movement of external elements in GB and the task was given under the purview of ‘Crisis Management Committee’. It was also agreed in the meeting that 4th Wings of GB Scouts for a security of the Diamir-Bhasha Dam may be raised at the immediate basis. The meeting was also told that along with PIA, Air Blue and Shaheen Air will also start operation from Gilgit and Skardu soon.
The minister said that the law and order situation in the Gilgit-Baltistan region is a serious concern for the Government therefore taking some ad hock and cosmetic measures will not work. “We will have to plan on the concrete basis so that the incident of terrorism and sectarian violence may be controlled through pre-emptive steps and this menace terrorism may be brought into the control for ever”, the minister emphasized.
He assured the Chief Minister GB of the full cooperation of the Federal Government to keep law and order situation under control. He advised the authorities convened to take special care in the forth coming month of Moharram.
