Governor Sindh, Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad for working on war footing to eradicate polio
Karachi: Governor Sindh, Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan, has called for working on war footing to achieve the target of polio- free Pakistan by the end of year 2012.
“This is only possible if we achieve 100 per cent immunization against polio,” he said while presiding over a high level meeting at the Governor House here on Thursday.
A representative of World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Hussain A. Gezairy, Sindh Health Minister, Dr. Sagheer Ahmed, and officials of Sindh Health Department and representatives of UNICEF also attended the meeting. It was decided that the measures against polio should be made foolproof.
Dr. Ebad informed that the top leadership of the country is committed for the success of the steps for the eradication of polio. He directed the officials concerned to concentrate towards achieving the target of a polio-free Pakistan.
The Governor said that it be ensured that polio drops are administered to every child under five years of age. He also stressed on the planning and monitoring in every district. Dr. Ebad also called for improving and expanding the routine immunization. He stressed that every segment of the society including elected representatives, ulema, parents and teachers should be the part of campaign to make it a success.
The WHO’s Director for the Mediterranean Region, Dr. Gezairy, assured full cooperation on the part of the WHO in this behalf. He said that Pakistan is among the four countries where polio has not been eradicated fully.
Dr. Gezairy informed that under the Basic Need Programme, the WHO and the government have started for social sector improvement in the districts of Dadu and Jamshoro.
