Islamabad: Head of Pakistan delegation and Goodwill Ambassador for Women Empowerment, Ms. Fiza Batool Gilani held a bilateral meeting on Wednesday with Head of Canadian delegation Ms. Rona Ambrose, Minister for Status of Women at the side-lines of the ongoing 56th Session of the Commission on Status of Women, at the UN Headquarters, New York. Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Ms. Bushra Zulqarnain, Member of the National Commission on Status of Women and Mr. Saeed Alvi, Secretary Human Rights also participated in the meeting.
Ms. Gilani thanked Canadian Minister for their consistent support to Pakistan through a number of development projects and assistance rendered for various humanitarian projects in flood affected areas. Ms. Rose on her part reaffirmed Canadian desire to closely work with the Government of Pakistan and to support development projects for the empowerment of women.
The two dignitaries shared their experiences and steps taken to improve the lot of women and children in their countries with a particular focus on rural areas. Ms. Gilani enumerated details of various projects being undertaken such as Benazir Income Support Programme and distribution of State Land to landless farmers (in particular women) to improve their economic status and to enhance their decision making role in the family and society. She also conveyed details of recent legislations approved by the parliament to combat all forms of violations against women.
Ms. Rose appreciated these steps and requested to share details of these legislations. She also thanked Ms. Gilani for Pakistan’s sponsorship of the Canadian initiative in the General Assembly to celebrate an international day of Girl Child.
