Heavy spell of monsoon rains: PM directs concerned authorities to remain alert

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the provincial governments and concerned departments to remain alert in view of the heavy rains and flood situation various parts of the country, including Karachi.

In a statement, he instructed the National Disaster Management Authority to extend full support to the provincial governments and institutions to ensure safety of life and property of the people of low-lying areas.

The Prime Minister, in his message to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, assured that the federation will provide all possible assistance to the provincial government to deal with the difficult situation.

He also advised the elected representatives monitor the relief and rescue operations of the concerned agencies.

Meanwhile, Rescue and Relief efforts are underway as the ongoing monsoon rains spell is causing floods in various parts of the country.

Radio Pakistan’s Multan correspondent reports that due to heavy rains in Suleman range for the last three days, hill torrents in Rajan Pur and Dera Ghazi Khan have caused further damage to crops, homes and properties in low lying areas.

He said the district administrations of both districts are busy in rescue and relief activities in the flood affected areas.

The heavy rain spell has also caused urban flooding in urban areas of Multan, Khanewal, Vehari and Muzaffargarh.

WASA Multan has declared emergency in Multan city and operating disposal station to drain the rain water from roads and streets.

In Sindh, the district administration Hyderabad is setting up 29 relief camps to deal with any emergency situation during the new spell of monsoon rains.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, fourteen houses were completely damaged while twenty-three partially damaged due to ongoing torrential rains during last twenty four hours in Chitral, Haripur and Dera Ismail Khan districts.

According to a report issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Peshawar on Sunday, roads’ clearance operation is underway in Chitral and other districts.

The PDMA said it is in close contact with all relief and rescue departments to tackle any situation arising from rains and floods in the province.
