Housing Minister showed Documentary Proofs to the Standing Committee regarding Barakoh Land Scam
Islamabad: The meeting of the Standing Committee on Housing and Works was held today at Committee Room No. 7 of the Parliament House. The agenda of the meeting was to discuss the private member Bill regarding the abolition of discretionary quotas in housing schemes; moved by Zahid Hamid and other MNAs.
Federal Minister for Housing and Works, Makhdoom Syed Saleh Hayat clarified that the bill has become infructuous because there is no discretionary quota available in any housing scheme under the Ministry. The housing quotas have been clearly categorized and no one has the prerogative to allot any plot according to mere discretion. As far as the housing schemes Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) are concerned, they do not come under the jurisdiction of the Standing Committee on Housing and Works.
During the proceedings of the Committee meeting, the Federal Minister apprised the members about the facts regarding Barakoh land scam. He also showed some documentary proofs including receipts collected from the Patwaris of that area. The Minister told the Standing Committee that he had appeared voluntarily before the Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan who is looking into the matter. The next date of hearing is 11th July, 2011 and he expressed his commitment to follow the case until full justice is done.
The Federal Minister shared with the committee about his personal visits of the Barakoh subject land few days ago in order to have a firsthand knowledge of all the relevant aspects.
In reply to question of Ms. Khalida Mansoor, the Federal Minister said that he has changed three Estate Officers within a span of only two months so that rules and regulations are followed in letter and spirit. He further said that recently Mr. Saeed Ramzan has been appointed as Estate Officer who belongs to District Management Group and is an upright person. While expressing his confidence over the new Estate Officer, he said that he would definitely abide by the rules.
Federal Minister categorically mentioned, “the public has every right to get their money back along with interest. As I succeeded in getting back the money in case of Rental Power Plants, I firmly believe that all persons involved in corruption and irregularities will have to bear the brunt. I have already declared my agenda of zero tolerance to corruption and have sacked many high ranking officers over their involvement in irregularities”.
