Karachi: IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon addressed members of the Rotary Club Karachi at a weekly meeting, discussing the integration of advanced technologies in policing to improve safety and manage crime effectively. During his speech, he detailed several initiatives, including the installation of face recognition cameras and the potential use of these technologies for issuing traffic fines.
According to Sindh Police, IG Memon emphasized the use of cameras and modern technology as crucial tools in crime prevention. He highlighted the installation of face recognition cameras at city entrances and exits and announced plans to install an additional 1200 cameras under the Safe City Project. Memon also mentioned a forthcoming plan to automate traffic fines through camera detections.
Memon addressed the socioeconomic factors influencing crime rates, citing unemployment linked to economic instability as a key driver of rising crime. He asserted that while police face criticism, the responsibility for societal issues should be shared among all stakeholders.
He further elaborated on efforts to promote community-friendly policing by involving respected community members from various sectors. Memon also discussed the allocation of funds to police stations to empower them for more effective and autonomous policing, noting a decrease in crime and corruption as a result of these measures.
Highlighting the criticism often directed at the police, Memon compared it unfavorably with international perspectives but pointed to the successful security arrangements during Muharram, which hosted 46,000 domestic and international guests, including the spiritual leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community. This event, he noted, not only showcased excellent security but also generated significant foreign exchange.
Memon called for recognition of the positive aspects of police work, just as criticisms are widely broadcasted. He concluded his remarks by announcing plans for a significant recruitment drive within the Sindh Police, aiming to fill 25,000 positions, which he noted as the largest in terms of numbers to date.
