Info Minister terms training for journalists vital to combat fake news

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has emphasized the need to equip journalists and digital freelancers with proper training, enabling them to contribute towards the country’s image building and to protect vulnerable groups.

He was addressing a training programme for journalists in Islamabad this evening.

The Minister said the digital space has grown significantly and there is an utmost need for verification and authentication of news to provide people with a true perspective.

He further said such training programmes will help build our society, bridge the gap between communities, and eradicate religious extremism and hate mongering on certain social media platforms.

The Minister said any misleading or incorrect news regarding the economy can have serious consequences and adversely affect already vulnerable economies.

He said that vulnerable groups and marginalized communities are often targeted through digital media under certain hidden agendas.

Attaullah Tarar added that better
use of digital space promotes a positive image of the country and creates a safe and secure environment for the people. He affirmed that the government is fully committed to the freedom of speech and the freedom of journalism as enshrined in the Constitution.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja said fake news is a big challenge in the era of digital journalism. She highlighted that digital media has the power to make or break lives. She said equipping journalists with modern techniques is vital for responsible journalism and to combat disinformation.
