Islamabad Diplomatic Community expresses solidarity with Pakistan

Islamabad: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar addressed Heads of Diplomatic missions in Islamabad this evening at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sought their support and assistance for the flood affected areas of southern Pakistan, particularly Sindh.

Foreign Minister Khar informed members of the diplomatic corps of the devastation caused by the torrential rains that were continuing in southern Pakistan. The disaster had affected more than five million people, and a very large area.

She recalled the support and assistance given by the international community in the past including for the 2005 earthquake and last year’s floods. She urged an equally generous response to the current natural calamity that continued to cause immense suffering.

She saluted the resilient people of Pakistan who have demonstrated immense courage in dealing with such disasters in the past. They would do so again, but in view of the magnitude of the devastation caused they needed the full support of the international community.

Foreign Minister Khar added that Pakistan’s foreign policy aimed at forging close, friendly relations with all countries in the region and the world. We have “walked the talk” of dialogue, peace and development. Pakistan is a factor of stability in the region and the world.

The Dean of the Diplomatic corps, His Excellency Ambassador Sapar Berdiniyazov of Turkmenistan, expressed solidarity and support, on behalf the diplomatic community, for the people and government of Pakistan in addressing the impact of the devastation. He assured the Foreign Minister that Pakistan’s appeal for international assistance had been relayed to their capitals.

The Foreign Secretary thanked the diplomatic community for their expression of support and solidarity. He referred to the appeal for international assistance launched by the President and the Prime Minister and requested all diplomatic missions for urgent response from their capitals. He added that Pakistan aspired peace, stability and development in the region.

The Foreign Minister was inter-acting this evening with the diplomatic corps at a special event arranged at the Foreign Ministry.
