Karachi Electric Supply Company cautions of early monsoon-related power issues

Karachi: The Karachi Electric Supply Company has sought government protection to the maintenance and repair mechanism of the utility during the upcoming monsoon season forecast to start early this year, and said that in view of the union miscreants continuing to disrupt and block smooth functioning, things could go towards a serious electricity supply crisis.

The KESC understands that the government needs to provide peaceful and pressure-free atmosphere to the power utility employees in the best interest of the electricity consumers in particular and the City life in general. The rains could cause shocks and jolts to the widespread power distribution system all across the City and local faults would occur that would need to be repaired on fast track basis.

Last monsoon season, the KESC was able to attend to rain related issues quite on time and without any undue delays. However, this year with the union already continuing to block and attack the employees both inside and outside offices, it would only add to the miseries of the citizens if the government did not fulfil its responsibility of safeguarding the power infrastructure from sabotage.

The KESC said that it was more than a month now that the union miscreants were pushing the utility employees out of their offices and destroying the sensitive and precious network, equipment and assets. This had been adding to the naturally caused local faults and putting the entire working atmosphere into jeopardy. Already facing resource limitations, the KESC had been overloaded with these manmade issues which in turn were putting the general public into suffering undue outages and voltage issues. The union miscreants had been carrying out illegal and criminal activities in the full view of the administration and law enforcement agencies yet there had been no action against them and the government had yet to enforce law and order.

On its part, the KESC had already made all efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict with the union. The management had approached the union on its own and opened dialogue on all disputed issues relating to both sides. The only priority before the management to make the talks meaningful was that the KESC’s customers deserved to be released of the miseries of delayed action on local faults and therefore the public complaints attending mechanism needed to be brought back to tension-free level before resolving management-union issues. However, in spite of three days patience by the management, the union miscreants stuck to their strong arm tactics and they continued to attack the utility’s employees, block their work, sabotage the power supply infrastructure and manhandle the repair and maintenance teams at work. This forced the talks to finish unconcluded.

The disruption and sabotage still continues. The government has not yet provided security blanket to KESC employees that could have supported the repair and maintenance system to function on smooth and fast track basis. The union miscreants continue to surround the utility’s main offices in State Life Building at Abdullah Haroon Road, Power House at Elandar Road and other major points. Employees are still blocked from entering into their work places. Repair of local faults is forced to be delayed and manmade faults are created. The striking employees have removed neutral leads from almost all over the city putting the consumers into constant trouble of voltage fluctuation. All this could multiply in case of an early rainy season as forecast by the weather pundits.

The KESC understands that the government needed to play proactive role in the possible situation to pre-empt any unpleasant situation during the upcoming monsoon. This would not only be in the line of its duty to create a peaceful atmosphere in the City but also to keep the City life running and the wheel of development and industry moving.
