Karachi Electric Supply Company halts operations due to security concerns

Karachi: Karachi Electric Supply Company has stopped all field operations from Wednesday and decided not to attend distribution faults and send maintenance teams out for any field work in view of the government’s failure to provide protection to the utility’s employees, get its offices opened and ensure peaceful working environment.

KESC said that at numberless times the management had contacted and written to the government and had lodged a number of FIRs over the illegal and unlawful attacks and blocking by union miscreants, but the executive authorities had not arrested a single culprit so far. Even those who were caught red handed and arrested by police along with legally valid evidence had been released later.

Over 200 masked gun-carrying union miscreants attacked the utility’s head offices Wednesday morning and took about 1000 members of top management and other employees, including females, as hostage. Flashing weapons openly, they blocked all the entrances making it impossible for the management and employees to move. The law enforcement personnel present in big number outside the head offices took no action to disperse the attackers and silently stood to watch the lawlessness taking place. The families of hostage employees called frantically to know the welfare of their loved ones who were helpless because of the highhandedness of a handful of attackers in the presence of law enforcement agencies and live cameras of news channels. The attackers cut off all telephone lines and IT connections of the head offices and did not allow food and water to be taken inside. The families of employees and the management of KEC demanded due protection against the unlawful siege of the head offices and enforcement of law.

This was in addition to KESC’s Central Stores blockage caused by union hooligans for past over two weeks stopping any release of repair and maintenance material and equipment. The union hooligans have failed several attempts by KESC management to release repair material from the Central Stores have failed during the past weeks.
