Karachi: The Karachi Electric Supply Company has lodged an FIR with Defence Police Station against six activists of labour union on the charge of attempt to murder on the Director and DGM Safety and three other employees on Wednesday evening while they were leaving the utility’s head offices. Five persons were injured and three vehicles damaged in the attack. Law enforcement personnel present on the scene did not take any action to pre-empt the attack; neither did they apprehend the attackers.

The FIR lodged through GM Security Col. Amir said that a group of union hooligans led by Azizur Rehman Pathan, General Secretary of Labour Union, and comprising Babar, Raj Meer, Aijaz Chachi, Shaukat Sumbal and Farooq attacked the cars of Mr. Aamir Zafar, Director, Mr. Ali Raza DGM, Safety and Mr. Shoaib Naqvi GSM, with stones, sticks and batons with an intention to kill. Mr. Aamir Zafar, Mr. Ali Raza, Mr. Rehan, Mr. Abdul Samad and Mr. Wazir were injured in the attack and moved to various hospitals for first aid after which they were shifted to Aga Khan. Their medico-legal report was registered at Jinnah Hospital.

The condition of Mr. Ali Raza is reported to be serious who had deep wounds on his head and chest. Mr. Rehan had a fracture on the head. Mr. Abdul Samad received serious wound on his face. Mr. Aamir Zafar and Mr. Wazir received minor injuries. The Defence Police has not yet taken any action on the FIR. The union hooligans had also attacked Central Stores of the KESC on June 28 in the presence of law enforcement personnel in which they injured many KESC employees and damaged 13 trucks loaded with sensitive equipment and repair material.

The government and law enforcement agencies have not taken any action against the culprits of that incident as well. The authorities have not yet taken any action to remove blockages and violent presence of union hooligans from in front of the KESC offices and installations despite the specific orders of the High Court to that effect.

Meanwhile, Mr. Tabish Gauhar, CEO of KESC visited the injured in the hospital and enquired about their welfare. He expressed sympathy with them and asked the management to provide all medical help to the injured. He said on this occasion that the KESC would keep following the lawful path and would face all odds and difficulties in the way of performing its public service role with enhanced dedication and determination.

The CEO said that it was strange to observe that law enforcement personnel had not been implementing the Sindh High Court orders for providing due security and protection to KESC employees, offices and installations, and their half-willing and motionless presence at some of the locations did not prevent the union miscreants from attacking and injuring the utility’s employees and damaging vehicles and other assets. He demanded of the government to ensure due safety and security of KESC employees and its operations so as to enable the utility to continue serving and providing relief to around 20 million population of Karachi.
