KARACHI: Karachi’s municipal council, Baldia Uzma Karachi, has become the first in Pakistan to transition to solar energy, The move, inaugurated at the council’s head office, will see excess electricity sold to the electric utility, with further plans to transfer four hospitals and three major highways to solar power.
According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, a 150 KV solar system has been installed in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) building, with 80 KW of electricity already linked to net metering with K Electric. This initiative aims to generate cost-effective electricity for the city, with 259 solar panels expected to produce 650 to 700 units of electricity daily. The transition is part of broader efforts to enhance Karachi’s infrastructure and image, including solar installations in parks and entertainment areas. The Sindh government has also allocated 103 billion rupees for Karachi’s development in the current fiscal year, with upcoming projects like the Malir Expressway and new public amenities.
