Kenyan Diplomat Advocates for Removal of Trade Barriers with Pakistan

KARACHI: Deputy High Commissioner of Kenya Daniel Nganda emphasized the importance of removing trade barriers between Kenya and Pakistan, highlighting the Kenyan Mission’s commitment to enhancing trade and investment opportunities between the two countries. Nganda’s comments were made during his visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), where he met with several key officials and stakeholders.

According to a statement by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nganda stressed the need for mechanisms to address trade barriers and facilitate economic cooperation. He proposed organizing joint business networking sessions, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and trade fairs to boost bilateral ties. Senior Vice President KCCI Zia ul Arfeen and other prominent members attended the meeting.

Nganda pointed out that trade should be purposeful and called for collaboration between the governments of Kenya and Pakistan to remove trade bottlenecks through relevant regulatory bodies. He underscored the warm relationship between the two nations, which has been bolstered by strong trade and investment connections since Kenya’s independence in 1964.

Highlighting Karachi’s strategic importance, Nganda noted that the city serves as a gateway for Kenyan goods, including tea, to enter the Pakistani market. He reaffirmed the Kenyan High Commission’s dedication to expanding trade and investment portfolios and expressed eagerness to send business delegations for high-level meetings.

Earlier, Zia ul Arfeen welcomed the Kenyan Deputy High Commissioner and emphasized the need to diversify the trade basket to include value-added products. He suggested sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT as areas with potential for growth. Arfeen also noted that Pakistan spends significant amounts on tea imports from Kenya and highlighted opportunities for collaboration in research and development to promote local industry growth.

Arfeen further mentioned the potential for cooperation in the Blue Economy, urging exploration of investment opportunities in fisheries, aquaculture, and other sectors to enhance food security and job creation. He highlighted the expanding trade relations with African countries and affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with Kenya through the “Look Africa Policy.”
